Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
