Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
