Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
